Sheep and Goat Research Station, Banavasi

The Hon’ble Chief Minister had given assurance for establishment of livestock research station at Banavasi, Kurnool, accordingly the Government of Andhra Pradesh have transferred 276.45 acres (200.00+76.45 acres) of land from Animal Husbandry Department, A.P., Hyderabad to Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati for establishment of 1) Sheep & Goat Research Station and 2) Animal Husbandry Polytechnic at Banavasi, Kurnool district vide G.O.M.S. No.24 dated 18.06.2016 of the AHDDF (AH-II) Department. The government has given administrative sanction for the establishment of the Sheep & Goat Research Station, Banavasi at Kurnool district as per G.O.M.S. No.50 dated 25.10.2016 of the AHDDF (AH-II) Department. Consequently, the SVVU has taken initiatives to improve the sheep and goat population under RKVY research project with an objective to introgression of fecundity Booroola (FecB) gene into Nellore Jodipi sheep through homozygous (BB) NARISUWARNA (NS) breeding rams to increase reproductive efficiency and lamb production and study the effect of FecB genotype on prolificacy and growth performance. Finally to disseminate fecundity Booroola mutation gene into smallholders flocks for increasing profitability through twinning. In addition, it is aimed to create a base population of Osmanabadi goats for genetic improvement, production and multiplication of superior bucks and to evaluate the performance of Osmanabadi goats for production, reproduction and lactation traits.
